Early-stage defence technology,
proven in combat

Gardar is a Norwegian venture capital fund investing in early-stage defense technology companies rooted in the Ukrainian innovation ecosystem. The fund invests from Seed to Series B in companies that have proven their technology works under real operational conditions.

A millennium of connection

Gardar takes its name from Garðaríki — the Old Norse term for the first Kyivan realm, reflecting over a millennium of connection between the Nordic countries and Ukraine.

This started with Norse Varangians who in the 9th and 10th centuries settled in these lands and integrated into local society rather than imposing their own culture — a model of engagement built on mutual respect rather than domination.

Through this fund, we aim to honor that history: helping to build the kind of strong fence that protects freedom and democracy.

"The Old Norse garðr and the Slavic gorod share a common ancient root — both meaning enclosure, or fortified place."

From pro bono to professional

Gardar grew out of Munkene ("The Monks") — a pro bono initiative in which Norwegian business professionals contributed expertise and capital to Ukraine's defense industry.

What began as voluntary engagement has evolved into a dedicated, full-time investment operation, bringing institutional discipline to a mission that remains unchanged: strengthening the companies at the frontier of European security.
